It’s not easy to keep the kids entertained over the summer holidays, but with the help of Peterborough One Retail Park, local families and visitors were able to access plenty of engaging events and adventurous activities throughout August.

Adrenaline-fuelled Adventures

Every Wednesday and Thursday last month, PE1 hosted a dynamic activity where people could reach new heights, test dexterity levels and explore the unknown. The schedule included:

Climbing Wall
Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, but there was no need to travel to a rock face to enjoy this pursuit as PE1 welcomed a mobile climbing wall on 1st and 2nd August. The 24-foot-high wall featured automatic belay systems allowing several climbers to scale it at once in complete safety. Top quality safety equipment was provided and trained instructors were on hand to offer advice and guidance.

Ninja Assault Course
On 8th and 9th August, the UK’s first mobile Ninja Assault Course arrived to PE1. Based on ninja values of strength, balance, upper body power and determination, the course tested participants’ speed and stamina against the clock.

Spider Mountain & Cannon Ball Blaster
Spider Mountain and Cannon Ball Blaster were on offer to visitors on 15th and 16th August. Spider Mountain provided a physical challenge with plenty of fun. To reach the top, people climbed and crawled through a maze of seven elasticated spiders’ webs. When at the top (7 metres up), the only way down was via the exhilarating vertical drop slide!

Great fun for children and adults, Cannon Ball Blaster was fast and furious …like paintball but without the bruises and the mess. Participants shot at each other with soft, foam balls – the aim of the game to get the most balls into the opponents’ net, located on top of their cannon ball blaster gun. The Cannon Ball Blaster action took place inside an inflatable arena.

Mobile Zip Line
The Mobile Zip Line is a revolutionary concept in mobile entertainment and thrilled visitors to PE1 on 22nd and 23rd August. Riders were fitted with a harness and helmet before climbing the staircase to the launch platform 8.3 metres off the ground. Once on the launch platform, the rider waited for their turn in the safety of the launch barrel, this is where they were attached to the line. When the rider had completed the safety checks, the operator rotated the launch barrel into position, and the rider launched off… suddenly flying towards an inflatable target!

The zip line proved to be a popular attraction with both young and old taking their turn to see PE1 from a whole new perspective.

Caving Simulator
For the final week of fun, on 29th and 30th August, PE1 gave visitors the chance to enter and explore a realistic artificial caving experience. With over 90 feet of tunnelling inside, explorers could enjoy two levels, sumps, stalagmites, squeezes and there was full internal CCTV for spectators to watch from outside.

Getting Crafty

PE1 also hosted a craft workshop for children at the retail park every Friday in August, allowing little ones to nurture their artistic talents and meet new friends. During these supervised events, kids could design and decorate various craft items to take home and keep. These included:

3rd August: Ceramic Gnome Decorating
Little ones could paint and decorate a ceramic gnome to proudly display at home or in the garden.

10th August: Baseball Cap Decorating
Mini fashionistas used a range of fabric pens, paints and accessories to create their own head-turning cap.

17th August: Pirate Craft Fun
Ahoy me hearties! Little swashbucklers designed their own fabric bandanas, treasure chests and eye patches during a pirate themed event.

24th August: Clowning Around
Children created clown masks in this fun craft workshop and prepared themselves to entertain friends and family with the finished results!

31st August: Campervan & Trainer Workshop
Children could design and paint their own vintage VW campervan or trainer coin bank. Using a variety of paints, pens and other accessories, they produced unique money banks in which to save their pennies.

A Successful Summer

All of PE1’s Summer of Fun events drew in additional visitors, increasing footfall throughout the summer period. The retail park’s social media pages also saw follower numbers increase and high levels of engagement.

The retail park’s social media pages received plenty of positive feedback about PE1’s Summer of Fun:

Kirsty Roxy Lonnen: “My girls both loved taking part, thank you!”

Ruth Ellis: “I went to the hat decorating workshop and it was great. A great price too.”

“My two girls had loads of fun at the caving simulator. They spent all afternoon in there!”
