In 2015, one of the UK’s largest in-car safety campaigners, Good Egg Safety, revealed that 76% of car seats were either fitted incorrectly or were incompatible to the child or car.

From these figures, it was clear that car seat safety was a significant problem, with many parents being unaware of how to correctly choose or fit a car seat.

In addition to errors in car seat selection and installation, many parents would move their baby to the next stage – forward-facing car seat – too early (at approximately 9 months) because:

  • The baby appeared to have outgrown the car seat as their feet stick out of the seat shell
  • The older ECE R44/04 regulation allows a baby to move to a forward-facing Group 1 car seat at 9kg

It is, however, very important for a new-born baby to stay rearward-facing for as long as possible. This is because a new-born does not have a fully developed bone structure or adequate muscle strength and therefore cannot prevent its relatively large and heavy head from being thrown forward during an impact.

When rearward-facing, a baby’s head and neck is fully supported by the car seat, and the forces of an impact are spread over the whole back instead of just the head and neck.

Understanding the Latest Car Seat Safety Regulation: i-Size (R129)

i-Size is the first phase of the latest European car seat safety standard that was introduced in July 2013, called R129, and applies to new car seats (installed with ISOFIX) for babies and young children up to 105cm (approximately 4 years).

R129 aims to increase the safety of children in cars by bringing the safety performance of car seats to a new, higher level.

The R129 regulation was developed using the very latest research into child safety in cars and is therefore the future of car seat safety legislation, but will continue to run side-by-side with ECE R44/04 in the coming years.

What makes i-Size (R129) travel safer?

The new car seat regulation i-Size (R129) makes travel safer because there is:

  • Improved protection of the head and neck at higher forces during side and front impacts
  • Mandatory rearward-facing travel up to 15 months old
  • i-Size requires ISOFIX which means there is less chance of an incorrect fitting
  • i-Size car seats will fit almost all ISOFIX cars
  • Length rather than weight classification, making it easier for parents to select the right car seat for their child

Car Seat Regulations AxissFix Air

AxissFix Air

AxissFix Air

Setting a new standard in forward-facing child car seats, the Maxi-Cosi AxissFix Air is the world’s first car seat with built-in airbags. Utilising patented air safety technology, this reduces the forces on a child’s neck.

In a collision resulting in 10G or more, the airbags located in the harness straps inflate (within 0.05 seconds) with cold air cushioning your child’s head like a pillow. After just 1 second, the airbags will automatically deflate.

The AxissFix Air is suitable for children from approximately 4 months to 4 years, (61cm to 105cm) and combines the latest i-Size (R129) regulation with a 360° swivelling seat so that parents can easily get their children in and out of the car.

The seat can also be used rearward-facing (up to approximately 2 years or up to 87cm) to suit a child’s stage of development.
