Our Chairman, Richard Hammonds, recently spoke a little about the Hammonds furniture history and where it’s heading in the future.

Hammonds Furniture’s recent showroom relocation within Peterborough One Retail Park brings more space for beautiful fitted furniture displays and samples, giving way for even more variety of show stopping furniture for customers to see. What’s more the refurbishment meant that the new showroom became their first in East Anglia with fitted kitchen displays.

Can you tell me a little history about how the company was founded?

Well, it was founded by my grandfather, Thomas, who was a skilled cabinet maker. He received requests to make all manner of things, from coal scuttles to speaker boxes and that’s how it started.

During the 1950’s my grandmother Francis joined and that’s where the name T&F Hammonds started, with a store based in Nuneaton. My grandfather’s workshop was in the back and my grandmother sold homewares in the front. This then progressed to DIY, and from that it grew and developed.

The company’s latest venture over the last year has been the introduction of Hammonds kitchens within the Midlands and East Anglia. Can you tell us more about this new area of the business?

Richard Hammonds – Hammonds Furniture Chairman

Kitchens are a natural progression for us. It’s an installed product and we believe we have created a slightly different look and feel to what is currently in the market. We want people to understand they can have a beautiful looking kitchen without spending a fortune.

To celebrate Hammonds Furniture’s recent move, the mayor was invited to cut the ribbon and officially open the store. It was a great occasion with bubbles and cake, welcoming lots of new faces to explore the store.
